Surf Guiding
What is surf guiding?
Surf guiding is for surfers who already have surf experience and want to find the best possible conditions around Boa Vista. Instead of staying at one fixed spot, surf guiding is based on the daily forecast, swell direction, wind, tides and the surf level of the person or group.
A local surf guide helps you choose where and when to surf, making it easier to enjoy the island’s variety of waves without wasting time searching for the right conditions.
Why choose surf guiding in Boa Vista?
Boa Vista offers a wide variety of surf conditions around the island, and different spots work better on different days. Local surf guiding helps you make the most of your surf trip by finding the best possible conditions for your level.
Instead of surfing the same spot every day, we adapt each surf day to the forecast, the ocean conditions and the expectations of our guests. Our goal is to create safe, fun and unforgettable surf experiences using our local knowledge of Boa Vista and Cape Verde.
Why is local knowledge important for surfing in Cape Verde?
Cape Verde offers incredible surf potential, but conditions can be very different from one spot to another. Knowing where to go, when to surf and how the ocean behaves in different conditions can completely change the quality of a session.
Our experience on Boa Vista allows us to stay flexible and help surfers spend more time in suitable conditions, with better timing, better spot choice and a deeper understanding of how the island works.
How do you choose the best surf spot each day?
Every surf day in Boa Vista is different. We look at the forecast, swell direction, wind, tides and overall ocean conditions before choosing where to surf.
The final decision also depends on the surf level of our guests and the kind of waves they are looking for. Instead of following fixed schedules, we stay flexible in order to create the best possible surf experience each day.
Is surf guiding suitable for intermediate surfers?
Absolutely. Intermediate surfers are often the ones who benefit the most from surf guiding in Boa Vista. Knowing where to surf, when to surf and which conditions match your level can completely change the quality of a surf trip.
Our goal is not just to find waves, but to find the right waves for each surfer. By adapting every surf day to the conditions and the level of the group, we help surfers build confidence, improve their surfing and enjoy more time in the right conditions.
Do I need previous surf experience for surf guiding?
Yes. Surf guiding is designed for surfers who already have previous surf experience and can surf independently. You do not need to be an advanced surfer, but you should be able to paddle, catch waves and handle yourself safely in the water.
For beginners or surfers with little experience, surf lessons are the better option. Lessons allow us to choose suitable waves for learning, progression and confidence in the water. If you want to combine surfing with exploring different parts of the island, our Surf & Explore concept can also be a good fit. Surf guiding itself focuses on helping independent surfers find the right waves around Boa Vista.
Surf Lessons
Can beginners learn to surf in Boa Vista?
Yes. Boa Vista is a great place to learn surfing, with warm water, beginner-friendly waves and a relaxed island atmosphere. There are suitable waves for beginners throughout the year, depending on the daily conditions and the chosen beach.
Beginner surf lessons focus on ocean awareness, paddling, standing up, wave selection and basic surf safety. Step by step, students learn the fundamentals in a safe, supportive and fun environment.
Are surf lessons suitable for children?
Yes. Surf lessons can be suitable for children, depending on their age, confidence in the water and the daily ocean conditions. Surfing is a great way for children to connect with the ocean, stay active and build confidence.
We adapt lessons to the child’s level and experience in order to create a positive and enjoyable introduction to surfing. Safety, patience and having fun in the water are always the main priorities.
How long does it take to learn surfing?
Learning to surf takes time, practice and commitment. Catching your first waves can happen quickly, sometimes even in the first lesson, but really learning to surf is a longer process that continues for years.
Progress depends on many things, including your fitness, confidence in the water, focus, ocean conditions and how much time you spend practising. A surf lesson is a great way to start with the right technique, safety awareness and understanding of the ocean, but surfing is something you keep learning every time you enter the water.
Can I learn to surf during a one-week holiday?
You can definitely start surfing during a one-week holiday, and most beginners can experience the feeling of catching waves within that time. With regular lessons, you can learn the basic techniques, improve your confidence in the water and understand how to move safely in the ocean.
At the same time, it is important to be realistic. Surfing properly takes much longer than one week, and every person progresses differently. Your fitness, focus, confidence in the water and the amount of time you spend practising all make a difference. A one-week surf holiday in Boa Vista is a great way to begin, catch your first waves and build a solid foundation.
Is surfing in Boa Vista safe for beginners?
Yes, surfing in Boa Vista is safe for beginners when lessons take place in suitable conditions and with experienced instructors. Not every beach or wave is right for learning, so choosing the correct spot is important.
Before each lesson, we assess the ocean conditions and choose waves that match the level of the students. Safety, ocean awareness and confidence in the water are always part of the learning process.
Can advanced surfers improve with surf coaching?
Yes. Advanced surfers can benefit from surf coaching, especially when they want focused feedback on technique, positioning, wave selection, turns or overall performance.
Surfing is a lifelong learning process. Even experienced surfers can improve by receiving specific feedback, understanding local conditions better and working on small details that make a big difference in the water.
Levels
Do I need surf lessons or surf guiding?
If you are new to surfing or still working on technique, timing, positioning or confidence in the water, surf lessons are the best option. Lessons are not only for complete beginners. They can also be very helpful for beginner-intermediate and intermediate surfers who want to progress faster and understand what they need to improve.
Surf guiding is different. A surf guide helps independent surfers choose the right spot, understand the forecast and be in the right place at the right time. Guiding can include spot explanations and local advice, but it is not the same as surf coaching. If your main goal is to improve your surfing, lessons or coaching are usually the better choice. If your main goal is to find the best conditions around Boa Vista, surf guiding is the right option.
What surf level am I?
We describe surf levels in five main categories: Beginner, Beginner / Intermediate, Intermediate, Intermediate / Advanced and Advanced. Your level depends less on how long you have been surfing and more on how independently, safely and consistently you can surf in real ocean conditions.
Beginner surfers are learning the basics, such as paddling, standing up and riding whitewater waves. Beginner / Intermediate surfers already catch some green waves, but still need support with timing, positioning, paddling, wave selection and control.
Intermediate is a clear step up. An intermediate surfer has a solid amount of surf experience, catches waves consistently, rides both left and right and can handle themselves safely and independently in suitable conditions. Many intermediate surfers do not live by the ocean, but spend a lot of their holidays and free time surfing.
Intermediate / Advanced surfers are comfortable in a wider range of conditions and start linking maneuvers with more speed, flow and control. Advanced surfers focus on performance, positioning, power, rail-to-rail surfing and making better decisions on more demanding waves.
If you are unsure about your level, it is better to choose slightly lower rather than too high. This helps us find the right lesson, coaching or guiding option and create a safer, more enjoyable surf experience.
